Sophie and Hazel, numéro 1

"Sometimes things need to be seen as well as heard", I say. "And as the saying goes: a picture can tell a thousand words", I smile.

Victoria
"But it's not a picture, it is a plant" I complained, "Painting the flowers would be nicer than just giving someone a bunchof dying grass"

"But...aaarrgh", I complain. "There's no point arguing with you. You're just going to...ugh. I don't even know", I walk forward a few paces, faster than her so that I was in front.

Victoria
"I am just so what, Joey?" I asked, easily catching up with him to walk to his side. "Fabulous? Great? Exceptional? Beautiful?" I had no idea why I emphasised that word. Actually- that isva lie. I knew exactly why, but regretted it instantly. Shit. I fell into a step slower than Johann.

I immediately freeze. She knew. But she didn't mention it before. Why was she taunting me. My breaths grew heavy and so I turned away from her, scanning the landscape. I find somewhere that she wouldn't follow and start to climb the tree. Only if she was desperate, that's when she would follow.

Victoria
"Joey? Joe I'm sorry" I waited at the bottom of the tree, unsure how he would react if I climbed up. I know what can happen if you make someone angry and upset with you. The results aren't pretty and often hurt. "Joe?"

I block her out and climb almost to the top of the tree. I find a suitable branch and settle down. I stared around me and soaked in the landscape. Some part of me wanted her to join me. However the logical part of my brain was telling me she didn't care enough about me to do that. I sigh heavily, why did this have to happen.

"Joe? Please come down" I called, I knew the tree was too high for me, but I had to at least try. I grabbed the first branch, climbing up. About halfway up is where the fear hit me. I took a deep breath, do it for Joe. The nausea hit me and all I wanted was to look down. Shitshitshit bad idea. I kept climbing until I reached the branch and sat next to Johann. "I am never goddamn ever climbing another fucking tree that is this bloody high!"I exclaimed, almost forgetting the main reason I had climbed up.

"Good for you", I mutter sadly. I finally look at Victoria. "You shouldn't have come up", I say quietly."Not if its your worst fear". I look down at my dangling feet. It was weird, now that she was up here I'd almost forgotten why I was mad at her.

Victoria
"Your fear is the end of the world yet you still have to face this shit" Since Johann didn't look like he was going to punch me, I shuffled closer to him, not daring to look down. "Please remind me why I climbed up" I mumbled, burying my face into his arm and shoulder so I didn't have to look down.

I shook my head, "I don't even know why I climbed up". I stare at Victoria as she rests against me. "Why do you have to be like that?", I mutter. "One moment you like me and the next your directly bullying me".

Victoria
"Consequences" I mumbled, not moving. "It is all a fucking consequence" I added angrily, knowing that he would be curious about what I was on about. I didn't want to explain, as I will have to relive it. But I knew I would have to. Even if it isn't today.

At that moment, on top of a very high tree, a few drops of water announcing a down pour and one immense problem weighing on my shoulders I lost my temper. "What in the mother of holy fucking God are you the hell on about!", I yell. After all these years, cramming my emotions into a deep pit in my soul, I had let my anger show.

Victoria
At his anger, I lifted my head up, not caring/noticing the height. I sighed, deciding shouting would get me no where, but emotion was true in my voice, a mixture of fear, anger and sadness. A bad mix really. "I was fifteen, recently moved house, meaning new school. I thought it would be like the rest. Everyone ignoring me. But it wasn't. One guy, his name was Josh, became my best friend. And I thought... I thought he was the one for me. We got together a few weeks after I thought this. I became lovestruck, got a tattoo and shit like that.." I showed him my wrist with the heart beat on. "Then one time at a party, he got me drunk. Badly drunk. Then spiked my drink for extra assurance. Then he made his move. He-he" I didn't continue, I think he could grasp what happened. " After the party, he started abusing me, bullying me, saying I was the one who abused him. He got his friends in it too." I sighed deeply, "He was a great guy before that. Caring, loving, my best friend, everything you are, Joe. Sometimes I have an episode where I think you're him, and try to cover up any fear with stupid jokes or bullying"

My face softens at her words. "I'm sorry I shouted", I say quietly. "And I'm sorry about Josh, but you should know that I would never hurt you".

Victoria
I sighed and shuffled closer, "I would break your cute little nose even if you tried" I replied, smiling weakly, brushing at my eyes.

I reach my arms out and pull her into a hug. "You would try, and you would fail", I reply in the same tone. "Any other soul shattering moments I should know about?", I ask.

Victoria
"I don't know about soul shattering, but I do have funny stories. I should tell you about the time my friend shot himself in the foot- oh wait that was you" I said, happily accepting the hug and wrapping my arms around him tightly.

I laugh slightly, "Oh, so we're friends are we?", I joke. "I thought that I was a wimpy twat who almost fell out of a moving car".

Victoria
"Mm. A wimpy Princess twat who fell out of a moving car and over a log" I corrected, smiling at him. "You're my friend. My only friend. Which makes you also my best friend, 'cos there ain't much competition"

I smile, "and since honesty is the best policy: you are my first ever friend". I pull back from the hug and hold out my hand for her to shake, "truce?"

Victoria
I smiled at him, quite brightly, and taking his hand. "Truce" I confirmed, shaking his hand firmly, then forgetting to let go of his hand as I lowered mine. "Wait, first friend? Why first? You seem like the type to have loads of friends"

"Not in the slightest", I say. "I guess you could say that I was kind of like Harry Potter when he was in primary school. Because the one bully made everyone hate him. But then when he was in the right place, Hogwarts, he became famous".

Victoria
"'Right place'? So where is your right place?" I asked, now watching Joe carefully, still holding his hand and leaning against him. Considering the height and previous events, I was relaxed and comfortable here.

I consider that for a while, knowing there was only one answer. I use my finger to move Victoria's face around so that she was looking at me, "with you", I whisper.
