Zach exhaled through his nose sharply which caused a quiet whistle as he placed his hand under Ellie's chin and lifted it up lightly. Even though he wasn't very tall, he was still significantly taller then her. Just then, his phone rang."Aw, shit."He moved back.

Ellie
"Too ironic" I say with a small smile "A guy with no friends is interrupted by his phone ringing" I add.

"That's not ironic, that's a fucking sign,"Zach muttered angrily as he fished out his phone out of his pocket. He checked the Caller ID and took a deep breath. Here we go."Good afternoon,"Zach said, in a voice so odd for him. After a minute of uh-huhing, his eyes widened."San Francisco? But-"He started frowning, but the person on the other side shushed him."We're expecting you to come there with the first flight."Zach hung up.

Ellie
I glanced at him, frowning. "What about San Francisco?" I asked.

"Seems like I'm going there, uh..."Zach answered frowning even more."Turns out the job is located in San Francisco. I did not know that."

Ellie
"But that's the other side of the country" I say, still frowning. Why do I care so much? We are just flatmates, not even friends.

"I know my Geography, thanks,"Zach said, trying to use sarcasm to dig his way out of this conversation. Here's the reason why he never wanted to date. It was too complicated even to talk with others.

Ellie
I shrug "I was stating a fact" I say, not looking at him.

"But I was, too."Zach said and got up, going to pack his bags.

Ellie
"So when are you leaving?" I asked, picking up my newspaper again.

"In approximately 20 minutes."Zach said and looked at the clock."Make that 17."Luckily they live near the airport, not in the middle of Manhattan.

Ellie
"Oh" I say simply, also glancing at the clock. "Do you think you will return to New York?" I asked.

"Um, not in a year or two. Or five."Zach shook his head.

Ellie
"That is a long time" I say, glancing at him.

"Yeah,"Zach said absentmindedly."So, I guess it's a goodbye,"he turned around to her, all packed and ready to go.

Ellie
I nodded "I guess it is. Good luck with your job" I say, with a smile.

"Good luck to you, too."Zach said flushing lightly. He smiled, the warmth in the smile very out-of-character for him."Bye."He said, breaking the coziness of the moment.

Zach came in his class and the students went quiet for a moment before greeting him. With help of a some kind of a miracle, they actually liked him. He smiled at his class and sat down."As all of you, I hope, know, today it's book report day."He started the lesson after he said hello to his students."And, by the weirdest coincidence, it's a book by Ellie Douglass, which I personally knew,"Zach sighed quietly, a note of melancholy in his voice.

A hand shot into the air, instantly everyone knew who it was, Jack. He always asked questions, let's say he is the biggest nerd in the class.

As a hand blocked his view, he looked down at Jack."Yes, Jack?"Zach asked, as politely as he could. But frankly, that kid was a bit annoying.

"How do you know Ellie Douglass?" Jack asked, looking up.

"Oh, well, that's quite a story."Zach started."You know how I mentioned I lived in New York? It was really interesting, but hard at times. The hardest thing to do was get a flat. And ever since I've first been in Manhattan, I dreamed of having a flat somewhere in it. One day I finally got it. It wasn't as close to the Central Park, or the center of Manhattan, but it still, irrevocably was Manhattan, and it was New York. It was all good and boring, until one day I awoke because I heard someone in my apartment. And that, my friends, was Ellie Douglass. Don't tell anyone, but she scared the shit out of me."That comment caused a couple of giggles."At that time, I wasn't really reading much YA novels, so I didn't even know who she was. And look at us now, doing one of her books for our book report."

"So, sir, you lived with her?" Jack says, his hand still in the air "Did anything happen between you?"

"What kind of a question is that? Of course nothing happened between us,"Zach laughed bit."Now, I suspect everyone's read the book?"
